What is it about this game that moves people like it does?

Why do 12 men or women chasing a black piece of rubber with sticks around a rink have such a
profound effect on so many things? It’s what kids do for fun, hobby and habit. It’s what adults
do for fun and business. It’s what parents pass down to their kids like a treasured family
heirloom. The business of hockey or ice hockey has worked its way into our homes, businesses and
lives like nothing else in Canada.

Are you one of the few people who never played hockey or team sports at all for that matter growing
up?

You have no idea what just happened when the group of people that you are sitting with at the lounge
just started yelling and cheering when the other team surrendered their sticks to the ice.
Why did they all laugh when you just asked what quarter they were in? Are you dreading going into
the locker room with your son or daughter at their first hockey game because you’re not sure what
goes where, or what each team coach’s coaching approach is like?
Wouldn’t it be nice to contribute to an ongoing conversation without people asking what you were
talking about? When your boss asks you who your favorite player is wouldn’t it be nice to at least
know of one that is currently playing? We can fight it all we want but let’s face it if you want to
do business with Canadians you really should at least know something about Hockey.
